A Trinity

Destination Breakfast – Part One

 Wanting something simple
Away from the riches of the Pacific Coast,
Two people ventured out
To a place we’ve come to love most.

This simple cafe
It boasts battered age as its charm
Yet serves up delicious food
With a hot sauce, their signature 5-Alarm.

Then a slow drive
Up the only road
Past more of the same
Shades of old.

You get a sense of
An independence.
A desire to be left alone,
Living in a canyon, simple, yet so bold.

Unexpected Opulence – Part Two

 As we headed out
Along this narrow one-lane road,
Up on the hillside stood a new church
Barren surroundings, stark and cold.

We decided to stop,
Take a quick look around.
Found a door open
Heard only a hushed, reverent sound.

A rainbow of light
Spilled out onto the floor
An unexpected treasure chest of riches
On the other side of that door.

The simple, monastic life
Existed no more.
Three solitary people sat quietly as
We stepped through that door.

Why do humans think God needs riches?
Millions of dollars necessary to pray?
Why are places built like this,
Pretending to be simple in such a rich way?

Nature’s Church – Part Three

Then off to a nature sanctuary
Where simple sugar water was offered to eat.
And the congregation comes hungry.
Eagerly lapping up this heavenly treat.

They come humble.
Naturally clothed in iridescent sunshine.
A new reverent, hushed sound was emitted.
This time, it was mine.
